Littlefield Fountain - Austin, TX

This is a close up of the Littlefield Fountain that is on the south side of the UT Tower. It was built as a World War I memorial comprised of a bronze prow of a ship (the Boat of America) The ship bears a personification of Columbia (the Spirit of Independence), holding aloft two torches (the Flame of Freedom) and flanked by two military figures (Army on the proper left; Navy on the proper right). Ahead of this arrangement are three plunging, finned sea-horses (symbolizing mob hysteria), only the two outer ones mounted by merman (man's discipline). It is a wonderful work of art and is probably the most photographed fountain in Austin. There is a local legend told by college students about the Sea Horses that is quite funny but to hear it you probably need to ask a UT alum. Almost everyone I know knows the legend but I will leave it off the blog here.

  2. Wait, what's that legend? :) Great image and info on the fountain. I don't think I've seen it taken from that angle.
